Wandering Narratives

About the Series:

Wandering itself becomes the pictorial principle of Wandering Narratives. Shadowy figures move through dense forests, follow winding paths, encounter houses and benches, or gather around a small fire. The landscape does not merely surround them; it determines their movement. Tree trunks, paths, clearings and forms condense into a space in which orientation must be sought anew again and again.

In some works, the scenes emerge clearly in black, white and shades of grey, while others condense into almost entirely black pictorial worlds. Matte and glossy surfaces lie closely alongside one another, causing paths, trees, houses and figures to appear or disappear into the darkness depending on the incidence of light. Viewers must change their position, move closer and allow their gaze to wander across the surface in order to grasp what is depicted. The act of wandering thus takes place not only within the images, but also in the act of seeing. Figures emerge, lose themselves among the trees or continue their journey elsewhere. Characteristic of Narratio Graphica, Wandering Narratives connects the movement of the figures with the movement of the gaze: what becomes visible depends on the viewer’s position, on the light and on their willingness to take up the path through the image themselves.
